Kolkata: The West Bengal government would pay special attention so that people living in Junglemahal and the Darjeeling hills have access to electricity, Power minister Manish Gupta told the assembly today.
"Special focus will be given to ensure that each and every household particularly BPL families get access to electricity in all areas including the Sunderbans, the hill areas and Junglemahal," Gupta said while replying to the debate on the budgetary demands for grants of his department.
Alleging that in the past 34 years of the Left Front rule only 50 per cent of the villages in the state were electrified, he promised that all the villages would be electrified in the next three years.
Gupta said peak demand during summer was around 6,400 MW, while power availability during peak hours was about 5525 MW.
Order has been placed on BHEL for the main plant package of the new 8th unit of the DPL of 1x250 MW which is under installation, he said, adding that the government would also look into the hike by CESC in power tariff.
He said politics in the power department and its production units would be stopped and indiscipline by the employees would not be tolerated.
