Earthquake May Ruin Strong Season For Darjeeling Tourism

Earthquake in North East India has brought trouble for the Darjeeling tourism. Due to the earthquake in Sikkim, tourists are unsure of traveling to Darjeeling.

Darjeeling is among the worst affected areas from the 6.8 magnitude earthquake. The response of the tourists is worrying for local tourism. Several tourists have cut their trip short to Darjeeling following the earthquake.

The hotels in Darjeeling are receving hundreds of calls from worried tourists asking for the local updates. Hoteliers have said that tourists are not sure about traveling to Darjeeling. Although so far there have been few cancellations but the uncertainty surrounding Darjeeling is growing.

After quite some time, Darjeeling had seen the strong tourist season. The violent protests over the Gorkhaland issue had dented the tourism industry. With the end of conflict, strong arrivals were expected this season. However the powerful earthquake is likely to play spoilsport for the tour operators and hoteliers.

Local tourism officials as well hoteliers are convincing tour operators not to abandon packages of Darjeeling. The hill resort is quite safe for the tourists. At the same time hotels are assuring tourists not to cancel their trips. Most of the hotels are fully booked for October.
