Plan: judge as hill panel head
Darjeeling, June 26: A retired judge may be appointed chairperson of the proposed committee that will determine the territorial jurisdiction of the new administrative set-up for the hills, Union home ministry sources said.
The move is in keeping with the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s demand that a “neutral person who will not toe the state government’s line” be made the head of the committee. The sources said the state was open to a retired judge being appointed chairperson.
The Morcha wants the administrative set-up to include the Gorkha-majority areas of the Dooars and the Terai. During a meeting earlier this month between the state and the Morcha, it had been decided that a committee would be formed to look into the hill party’s demand.
The committee will have four Morcha representatives and three state government members. The director of census will represent the Centre. The district magistrates of Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri will also be part of the committee. Anil Verma, the administrator for the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council, will be the panel’s convenor.
Asked about the possibility of a retired judge heading the hill committee, Morcha leader L.B. Pariyar said: “We have not heard anything from the state government yet. However, the state had earlier spoken about appointing a neutral person as the committee head.” He said the committee would have time till December to submit its report.
