Offerings at N. Indian tea auctions drop

Kolkata, Nov. 12:

This week at Sale No. 45, the total offerings (packages) at North Indian tea auction centres in Kolkata, Guwahati and Siliguri were 4,35,980 as compared to 4,60,038 in the corresponding sale of last year, according to tea auctioneers J. Thomas & Company Pvt Ltd.

The drop in offerings was largely due to lower offerings of CTC/Dust at Kolkata and Siliguri and of orthodox at Kolkata.

The offerings at Kolkata this week were 1,55,396 packages (1,97,821) comprising 97,646 CTC/Dust ( 1,38,925), 50,614 orthodox (52,825) and 7,136 Darjeeling (6,071).

The corresponding figures for Guwahati were 1,68,749 (1,49,974) and for Siliguri 1,11,835 (1,12,243).

Selected clean and better liquoring Assam CTC maintaining quality were around previous levels and occasionally dearer. The remainder were irregularly lower because of quality. Well-made Dooars sold readily at firm to occasionally dearer rates while the remainder tended irregularly easier. Tata Global was active. There was fair support from Hindustan Unilever for the leaf grades and active support for the dusts. Western India dealers were active for the liquoring sorts. There were fair number of enquiries from North India and from local sections. Exporters operated on the bolder brokens and fannings.

Demand for orthodox offerings was better. Selected cleaner whole leaf and larger brokens grades were around last. The remainder tended easier. North India operated on the bolder whole leaf. Tippy varieties saw some export enquiries. There were fair number of enquiries from Hindustan Unilever for the fannings.

Selected Darjeeling whole leaf and broken varieties maintaining quality witnessed good enquiries and sold well around previous levels. The remainder tended lower. There were good enquiries from Hindustan Unilever while Tata Global operated selectively. Local dealers operated for cheaper sorts.

Dooars tea sells readily at N. Indian auctions

Kolkata, Sept. 16:


This week at sale No. 37, the total offerings (packages) at the three North Indian auction centres at Kolkata, Guwahati and Siliguri were 4,29,321 as compared to 3,93,232 in the corresponding sale of last year, according to the tea auctioneers, J Thomas & Company Pvt. Ltd.

The offerings at Kolkata were 1,83,368 (1, 78,537) comprising 1,48,434 (1,31,620) of CTC/Dust, 29,198 (40,914) of Orthodox and 5,736 (6003) of Darjeeling. In other words, the offerings of Orthodox and Darjeeling have dropped.

The offerings at Guwahati were 1, 35,625 (1, 15,335) and at Siliguri 1, 10,328 (99,360).

Selected clean and liquoring Assam CTC teas were irregular around last while the remainder were lower. Well made Dooars sold readily while the remainder tended irregularly easier. There was good support from Tata Global and Hindustan Unilever. Western India dealers were active for the liquoring sorts.

The inquiries from North India and local sections were fair. Exporters operated on the bolder brokens and fannings.

Orthodox whole leaf grades sold at firm rates. Brokens and fannings were steady around last levels. Continental buyers operated on the tippy sorts.

Offerings at N. India tea auctions rise

KOLKATA, SEPT. 9:

This week at sale no 36, the total offerings (packages) at three North Indian tea auction centres at Kolkata, Guwahati and Siliguri were 4,26,229 compared with 3,68,201 in the corresponding sale of last year, according to the tea auctioneers, J Thomas & Company Pvt Ltd.

The offerings at Kolkara were 1,92,122 (1,84,105) comprising CTC/Dust 1,48,661 (1,31,044), Orthodox 36,782 (46,617 ) and Darjeeling 6,689 (6,444). There was a drop in offerings of Orthodox. The figures for Guwahati were 1,26,099 (99,188) and for Siliguri 1,07,998 (84,908).

Assam CTCs maintaining quality were around last and irregularly lower, particularly fannings. There was good demand for the plainer sorts which sold readily. Dooars were irregular around last levels. Tata Global was the mainstay while there was improved enquiry from Hindustan Unilever. Western India dealers were active for the liquoring sorts. The enquiries from North India and from local sections were fair. There were good export enquiries for bolder brokens and fannings.

Clean well made orthodox whole leaf grades were firm, while the remaining whole leaf grades tended irregularly easier. Smaller broken grades were firm while the larger brokens were irregular around last. Continental buyers operated on the tippy sorts. Darjeeling whole leaf varieties sold at irregular rates. Brokens and fannings sold at around last levels. There were useful enquiries from traditional exporters as well as the major blenders.
